MTP for Mac

Here you can find answers on some most popular questions on our 'MTP for Mac' product. And get some basic knowladge about MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) and its usage with Apple macOS.

Since version 1.2 you can write to an Android device if it implements such capabilities. If it's not it will be mounted read-only.

  1. MTP is a general purpose, Mac only text parsing application that permits the extraction of data from one of three types of text input; either incoming email, one or more text files or an ODBC.
  2. Mtp software, free download - Software Update, Nokia Software Updater, Anti Mosquito Software, and many more programs.

Being that MTP is a framework for Windows to import to wmv, my guess would be that you won't see it supported natively in OS X. Most cameras supported on OS X work by connecting a Firewire cable to the DV out of the Camera and import directly into iMovie, or the company provides its own transfer software.

Currently, it's known that Samsung devices do not have an MTP extension for partial file writes. It contradicts File-systems logic, which prevents us to support write on such devices. But such devices will be mounted read-only instead.

Read-Only mount means that you can read all data you need on your device, but not write or modify somehow files and data on it.

To write on devices that we unable to write to you can use Android File Transfer. How to disable driver you can find in the same FAQ section.

Native access to your Android (or any other MTP compatible devices**) on Mac OS X.

Just connect your Android phone or tablet via USB cable and you will get access to your photos, mp3, or any other types of files on its internal file systems. You will get them the same way as you would insert flash or any other external drive. You can use then with Finder or any application on your macOS.

Some devices may have their own subset of standards and not work with MTP for Mac. If you faced with such a device, please let us know, and we will think about how can we solve it!

Ok, let's dive into details! So, how OS X get to know what and how to deal with different devices and protocols? It needs some special plug-ins! They are located in Kernel of OS X and know how to work with this specific device and represent them to users through VFS (Virtual File System - a layer of abstraction which unifies your experience with file system at all). As you already understand, the main component of MTP for Mac is such a plug-in or Kernel Extension or some times it called 'driver'. This driver resides in a Kernel and waits until some MTP device will be connected to your Mac. On connection, it negotiates with the device to determine its specifics and represent it to VFS. Now you will see your Android phone or tablet like the usual disk in Finder and on the Desktop. From this moment you free to use any software you like, with your photos, mp3, or any other types of files on your device

Apple has got support for pictures only transfer with MTP/PTP in form of the application 'Photos'. The way it works with pictures is far from elegant and dictates you its own way of work with your pictures. Usually, when you connect your Android device with the USB cable you expect a drive appearance that you'll be able to explore with Finder. But this behavior is not supported by Mac OS X.

MTP or Media Transfer Protocol originally was invented by Microsoft, based on PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) which works on Universal Serial Bus (USB). Its aim was to extend the abilities of the original protocol to transfer not only pictures but other types of files too. Later MTP was selected by Google for their Android platform as the main mechanism of file transfer with desktop systems. It gave the ability to function all applications normally and have access to files from the desktop in parallel. Before MTP, Android connected by USB cable to desktop had to unmount SD-card and let desktop to work with SD-card exclusively. And here was a big problem, cause application which works with this device should be closed. And with primary storage, there was no way to work for the same reason.

Some older Android devices don't support Move operation (Android 8 and below). On such devices, a try to move a file will result in an error.

Because MTP for Mac lets you work with Android as with a USB stick, such disadvantage doesn't let you move files to move to Trash Bin (Delete your files in Fined by simple mouse movement).

But actually, there's exists a workaround. You can do it by shortcut or from Menu.

To do it by a shortcut, select files you want to delete immediately and press Option + Command + Delete.

Or in the menu of Finder Edit -> Delete Immediately...

In more details, you can read this nice article How to Use “Delete Immediately” on Files to Bypass Trash in Mac OS X.
